The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is full of fun ATV trails for riders of all skill levels. While the terrain may be challenging for novices, there are plenty of trails that are appropriate for any skill level. If you're looking for trails that are steeper, rocky and with more hills, you should venture to the northern part of the Upper Peninsula.
If you're looking for trails that are more rolling and have more gradual elevation, then you should head to the southern part of the Upper Peninsula.
Located in Rogers City, Michigan
The trails are made up of three interconnected loops - the Huron Shores Loop, the Presque Isle Loop and the U.P. Trail. The Huron Shores Loop is 8 miles long and follows the shoreline of Lake Huron. The Presque Isle Loop is 12 miles long and winds through the woods. The U.P. Trail is 15 miles long and is an inland route that climbs over 1000 feet and crosses the Huron Shores Loop twice.
For ATV riders, the loops can be linked together to create a longer trail ride that is appropriate for all skill levels - from beginners to experienced riders. For off-road vehicle (ORV) drivers, the trails are open year-round. For ATV riders, the trails are open from April to November. Parking is available at the trailhead. Restrooms are available and a small fee may be charged for vehicles.
Located in Calumet, Michigan
The trails are open year-round and are broken up into three different trails: the Peninsula Trail, the Lake Shore Trail and the North Shore Trail. The Peninsula Trail is 3 miles long and loops around the Keweenaw Peninsula. The Lake Shore Trail is 3 miles long and goes along Lake Superior.
The North Shore Trail is 1 mile long and travels through the woods. All trails are made up of single track and are open to riders of all skill levels. However, the trails are not recommended for novices. The trails are open for ORV driving during all seasons except during deer hunting season which is usually in December.
Located in mountainous Ontonagon, Michigan
The trails are open year-round and are broken up into two trails. The South Ridge Trail is approximately 1.25 miles long and is rated easy to moderate. The North Ridge Trail is approximately 1.25 miles long and is rated easy to moderate.
Both trails are open for all skill levels, but are not recommended for novices. The trails are open for ORV driving during all seasons except for hunting season.
Located in Houghton, Michigan
The trails are open year-round and are broken up into the Houghton Trail, the Stobie (stob-bee) Trail and the Burdell Trail. The trails are rated easy, moderate and difficult, respectively.
All trails are open to riders of all skill levels. While the Burdell Trail and the Stobie Trail are open for ORV driving year-round, the Houghton Trail is open during the months of March to October.
Located in Marquette, Michigan
The trails are open year-round and are broken up into four trails: the Ironwood Trail, the Lake Trail, the Upper Trail and the Houghton Trail. The Ironwood Trail is approximately 10 miles long and is a single track trail with a moderate difficulty level. The Lake Trail is approximately 5.5 miles long and has a moderate difficulty level.
The Upper Trail is approximately 5 miles long and has a difficult difficulty level. The Houghton Trail is approximately 3 miles long and is rated moderate. All trails are open for ORV driving during all seasons except for hunting season.
Located in Ontonagon, Michigan
The trails are open year-round and are broken up into two trails: the East Trail and the Ironwood Trail. The East Trail is approximately 10 miles long and the Ironwood Trail is approximately 10.5 miles long. Both trails are single track trails with a difficult difficulty level. All trails are open for ORV driving during all seasons except for hunting season.
